Gaming’s Biggest Release Day Just Got a Little Less Crowded
The battle for players’ attention in late 2026 has become one of the fiercest in recent gaming history, but one upcoming title has decided to step out of the traffic. Developer One More Level has announced that its first-person soulslike Valor Mortis will move from its original September 24 release date to October 13.
The decision comes as publishers continue to adjust schedules around the looming launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, which has prompted many studios to carefully position their releases throughout the fall. What was once an already crowded September calendar has evolved into one of the most competitive launch windows the industry has seen in years.

September 24, the game's former release date, has become particularly congested. Several high-profile titles are scheduled to arrive on the same day, creating a challenging environment for any new release hoping to stand out. Additional blockbuster launches in the surrounding weeks have only intensified the competition, turning September into a packed showcase of major franchises and anticipated new projects.
According to the studio, the delay will also provide valuable development time to incorporate feedback gathered from the game's recent demo. The move allows the team to further refine the experience while avoiding direct competition with a cluster of major releases. Figure 1 shows battle for player attention.
Valor Mortis marks a significant evolution for One More Level, the studio best known for the acclaimed Ghostrunner series. Early previews suggest the developer has successfully translated its signature fast-paced first-person combat into a darker, more methodical action RPG experience inspired by the soulslike genre.
Set in an alternate version of 19th-century Europe, the game imagines a world where Napoleon's empire never fell and a mysterious supernatural plague has spread across the continent. Players will navigate a grim landscape filled with dangerous enemies, blending precise swordplay with the studio's trademark fluid movement mechanics.
Although October offers slightly more breathing room than September, it is far from quiet. The month is already shaping up to host several major releases across multiple genres, ensuring that Valor Mortis will still face significant competition for players' attention.
Meanwhile, the industry continues to prepare for the arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI, a release so influential that it has effectively reshaped the launch strategies of numerous publishers [1]. As studios maneuver around one of the most anticipated games of the decade, the crowded release calendar of 2026 serves as a reminder of just how competitive the modern gaming landscape has become.
For Valor Mortis, the additional development time and a less congested launch date could prove beneficial, giving the ambitious soulslike a stronger opportunity to showcase its unique blend of first-person combat, dark fantasy storytelling, and alternate-history worldbuilding.
