A YouTube creator, Aeritha, has released over four hours of gameplay footage from the canceled Highlander: The Game.

Originally announced in 2008, the title was planned as a third-person action game published by Square Enix for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. It would have followed a new Immortal protagonist named Owen MacLeod.

Highlander: The Game was designed to begin over 2,000 years ago, with protagonist Owen MacLeod captured and enslaved by the Romans, forced to fight as a gladiator. After dying and mysteriously returning to life, his story unfolds across multiple timelines—ranging from Ancient Gaul and Pompeii to modern-day New York City—much like other entries in the Highlander franchise. The newly released footage offers a look at the game in its early, unfinished state. As a prototype build, it lacks polish, so viewers should expect rough visuals and incomplete gameplay elements.

The footage shows that Highlander: The Game was surprisingly far along in development before being canceled, appearing close to completion and in need of only final polish. It’s unclear why the project was ultimately shelved.

Still, the video offers an intriguing look at what could have been, especially for fans of the Highlander franchise. Credit also goes to reader “durka durka” for highlighting this discovery.
