Clair Obscur Makes History at the Game Awards, Taking Home Game of the Year
The debut game from independent French studio Sandfall Interactive, Clair Obscur, dominated this year’s Game Awards, winning Game of the Year along with Best Art Direction, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Performance, Best Score and Music, Best Independent Game, Best RPG, and Best Debut Game. Jennifer English claimed Best Performance for her role as Maelle, one of three Clair Obscur nominees in the category. The game fell short in the fan-voted Players' Choice award, which went to Wuthering Waves, and Best Audio Design, won by Battlefield 6.

Clair Obscur’s victory, while widely anticipated, is remarkable for its scale. The game began the year as an underdog, with Sandfall an unknown studio and Kepler Interactive a small publisher known for offbeat indie titles like Pacific Drive and Sifu. With Grand Theft Auto 6 delayed until 2026, Clair Obscur filled a gap in a relatively quiet year for major releases. Figure 1 shows Historic Win: Clair Obscur Claims Game of the Year.
Released in April to unanimous critical acclaim and boosted by a prominent spot on Xbox Game Pass, the cinematic, story-driven RPG quickly became a favorite of The Game Awards’ jury. Its triumph is all the more impressive given competition from established franchises and creators, including Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Bananza, Sony’s Ghost of Yōtei, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and indie sequels like Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades 2.
Clair Obscur, the debut game from French studio Sandfall Interactive, made history at The Game Awards by winning multiple top honors, including the coveted Game of the Year. Its success marks a rare achievement for a first-time studio at the world’s biggest gaming awards.
Recognition Across Categories
The game didn’t just win Game of the Year—it also dominated key categories such as Best Art Direction, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Performance, Best Score and Music, Best Independent Game, Best RPG, and Best Debut Game, showcasing its excellence across both creative and technical aspects.
Standout Performance
Jennifer English took home Best Performance for her role as Maelle, highlighting the game’s strong character work. Remarkably, Clair Obscur had three nominations in this category alone, emphasizing the depth of its storytelling and acting.
Overcoming the Odds
Starting the year as a relative unknown, Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive achieved something extraordinary. Despite competition from major franchises and celebrated creators, Clair Obscur rose from underdog status to critical and commercial acclaim.
Factors Behind the Success
Its cinematic, story-driven design, widespread critical praise, and exposure through platforms like Xbox Game Pass helped Clair Obscur capture the attention of both players and The Game Awards jury, solidifying its place as the standout game of 2025.
