New Mario Kart World Update Quietly Delivers Major Improvements, According to Players
Mario Kart World’s biggest hook is its open world, which links traditional races using intermission routes. In theory, it’s a smart idea — but in practice, players felt these connective segments got in the way of the real action. With the new 1.4 update, however, Nintendo seems to have taken the criticism to heart, rebuilding several major areas of the game.

Intermission tracks were so disliked that players often skipped them entirely during lobby votes. Nintendo initially tried to push them by making it harder to default to standard three-lap circuits, but the move backfired. Later tweaks to race frequency didn’t fare much better, missing the core issue: many players simply found the long, simple stretches boring. Worse, these sections encouraged tactics like bagging, which further hurt the experience. As the novelty faded, Mario Kart 8 even began outselling Mario Kart World. Still, Nintendo clearly wants Mario Kart World to last. To do that, the game needs a stronger argument for its defining feature — open-world racing. With the December 3 update, Nintendo completely reworked the courses themselves. Eight routes have been redesigned from scratch, with new layouts and fresh interactive elements. A Reddit post highlights how track shapes have changed, but the update goes well beyond eliminating dull straightaways.
Players say the updated areas now include all kinds of new features — ramps, boost panels, floating platforms, and even obstacles like whales and boats. The redesigned routes also finally introduce what fans have been begging for: more curves.
“It’s funny how just adding more turns makes it so much more fun,” one Reddit user commented in a thread highlighting the changes.
“Mario Kart World’s whole identity is the open-world driving element and traveling from place to place,” another fan noted. “I’m glad they didn’t just shove that into a side mode like many people wanted.”
Most of the redesigns focus on water-heavy sections of the game, which are easier to revise without drastically altering the larger world. Some players hope this signals a new era for Mario Kart World, though it’s unclear whether Nintendo will revamp the more complex regions. Still, this patch marks a meaningful shift in how Nintendo handles live-service games. The company — often criticized for ignoring feedback and forcing specific playstyles — is now showing a willingness to listen.
Other tweaks include custom item options and a humorous fix that prevents players from using a second Boo while already using one and holding two more. Full patch notes are available in the official list.
