New Aviation Software Engine Reduces Risk of Flight Plan Errors
Artificial intelligence is transforming industries worldwide, but aviation has remained one of the most challenging sectors to automate. Unlike consumer AI, where occasional mistakes may be harmless, errors in flight planning or weather interpretation can have serious safety implications.
To address this challenge, Colorado-based aviation technology company Jeppesen ForeFlight has introduced ForeFlight Airflow, an AI-powered aviation intelligence platform designed to support pilots with reliable, context-aware recommendations rather than replace human decision-making.
Instead of relying on general internet knowledge, the system combines flight-planning data, operational records, aircraft performance information, and aviation regulations to deliver recommendations based on the same trusted sources used by aviation professionals.

"Artificial intelligence is not enough for this industry—we need aviation intelligence," said Brad Surak, CEO of Jeppesen ForeFlight. "The right data, context, and reasoning must be applied every time while remaining aligned with industry safety and governance protocols." Figure 1 shows AI-powered flight.
Built Around Aviation Expertise
ForeFlight Airflow was developed using years of expertise in flight planning, navigation, crew operations, fleet management, and cockpit software.
Rather than treating every request as a simple question-and-answer task, the platform evaluates multiple operational factors simultaneously, including weather conditions, airport restrictions, fuel availability, aircraft performance, crew requirements, airspace regulations, and company procedures before generating recommendations.
The platform also supports multiple AI models, allowing airlines, business aviation operators, and individual pilots to integrate their preferred AI tools while maintaining control over their data and workflows.
Its first application, the ForeFlight AI Connector, links ForeFlight Mobile with existing AI platforms such as ChatGPT, enabling pilots to retrieve flight routes, fuel-stop options, weather information, and other planning data using natural-language queries. The company plans to expand compatibility to additional AI platforms, including Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude.
Making AI Recommendations Transparent
One of the biggest challenges for AI in aviation is transparency. Many AI systems provide answers without explaining how they arrived at a conclusion, making it difficult for pilots to assess whether a recommendation should be trusted.
ForeFlight Airflow addresses this by revealing the reasoning behind its recommendations. The platform identifies the data sources it used, the operational constraints it considered, and the alternative options it evaluated, giving users greater visibility into its decision-making process.
The technology is also designed to integrate with existing aviation safety management systems, supporting hazard identification, safety trend analysis, predictive risk modeling, and operational risk assessment rather than functioning as a standalone AI assistant.
By embedding AI within established aviation safety frameworks, the platform aims to strengthen decision-making while ensuring that pilots remain responsible for final operational judgments.
A Different Future for AI in Aviation
ForeFlight Airflow reflects a growing shift toward specialized AI systems built for high-stakes industries where accuracy, accountability, and regulatory compliance are essential [1]. Instead of replacing pilots, the platform is designed to process large volumes of operational data, reduce routine workload, and provide decision support while leaving critical choices in human hands.
The technology still depends on accurate, up-to-date information, and aviation professionals remain responsible for verifying flight data before acting on AI-generated recommendations. Its broader adoption will also depend on regulatory approval, industry validation, and continued real-world testing.
For now, Jeppesen ForeFlight is focusing on general aviation while preparing future solutions for commercial, business, and military operators. If successful, the platform could help define how AI is safely integrated into one of the world's most safety-critical industries.
