China Invests $210 Million in Diamond Semiconductor Technology
China has unveiled a $210 million initiative to establish its first fully integrated diamond semiconductor industrial chain, marking a major step toward developing next-generation chip materials capable of powering future high-performance electronics.
The new production base will be built in the Zhengzhou High-tech Zone in Henan Province following an investment agreement with Zhongke Powder Research (Henan) Superhard Materials Co., Ltd. The project is expected to strengthen China's domestic semiconductor ecosystem while expanding the country's leadership in synthetic diamond technology.

Building a Complete Diamond Semiconductor Ecosystem
Supported by Central South University, the company plans to develop a comprehensive manufacturing chain covering every major stage of diamond semiconductor production. Figure 1 shows diamond semiconductor.
The facility will manufacture chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipment, grow high-quality single-crystal diamonds, produce epitaxial layers, carry out micro- and nano-scale processing, and fabricate advanced packaging substrates. Bringing these capabilities together in one location is expected to streamline production and accelerate commercial development of diamond-based electronic devices.
Why Diamond Semiconductors Matter
Although silicon continues to dominate today's semiconductor industry, researchers worldwide are exploring diamond and other ultra-wide-bandgap semiconductor materials for future electronic systems.
Diamond offers several advantages over conventional semiconductor materials, including exceptional thermal conductivity, higher power-handling capability, faster heat dissipation, and reliable operation under extreme temperatures, high voltages, and intense radiation. These properties make diamond semiconductors particularly attractive for next-generation power electronics, electric vehicles, aerospace systems, telecommunications, and advanced computing technologies.
Strengthening China's Semiconductor Supply Chain
The project forms part of China's broader strategy to strengthen its domestic semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on imported advanced materials [1]. With a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan (approximately $210 million), the initiative is expected to expand Henan's well-established superhard materials industry into the fast-growing field of advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
By combining expertise in synthetic diamond production with next-generation chip technologies, China aims to position itself at the forefront of fourth-generation semiconductor development, supporting future innovations in high-performance electronics and emerging technologies.
