Microsoft has unveiled a new Deadpool-themed controller, launching just in time for the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. The controller is red, matching Deadpool’s outfit, and features a playful surprise on the back. While its design may be unconventional, it’s not the first time Microsoft has pushed the boundaries with Xbox controller designs.

A look back at Xbox controller history shows that Microsoft is open to experimenting with controller designs. This willingness to innovate has led to the creation of the Xbox Design Lab, where gamers can let their creativity shine by customizing their own controllers. Figure 1 shows Microsoft unveils a new Deadpool-themed Xbox controller: here's a look at it.

The History of Xbox Controller Designs

The original Xbox controller, simply named the Xbox Controller and nicknamed "the duke," was large and bulky, which resulted in a lukewarm reception. This changed with the introduction of the Xbox Controller S, which was designed for players with smaller hands. This trend towards smaller controllers continued with the Xbox 360 and subsequent gaming generations.[1]

Today, the Xbox Series X/S Wireless Controller is easily recognizable by its asymmetrical button layout and use of AA batteries. For those looking to invest more, the Elite Controller is available, featuring interchangeable back paddle buttons. Microsoft has placed a strong emphasis on customizability with the Xbox Series X/S Wireless Controller, leading to a wide range of impressive designs.

Xbox Design Lab

For gamers who enjoy personalizing their favourite gadgets, there's the Xbox Design Lab. Launched in 2016, this customization program enables players to refine their controller’s look. Players can customize elements such as:

  • Body (faceplate)
  • Back
  • Bumpers
  • Triggers
  • D-pad
  • Thumb sticks
  • A, B, X, and Y buttons
  • Share, View, and Menu buttons

The Wacky History of Special Edition Xbox Controllers

Over the years, Microsoft has released a variety of special edition Xbox controllers, often tied to popular media. For example, in 2023, to mark the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Microsoft introduced a pizza-scented controller. Available in four versions—one for each of the ninja turtles—the controllers feature a “built-in scent diffuser shaped like a slice of delicious New York ‘za.” While it’s a must-have for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans, the appeal of a pizza scent during gameplay remains uncertain.[2]

Another unique design from Microsoft includes the Sonic the Hedgehog Xbox controllers, released to coincide with the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie premiere. These controllers are adorned with faux fur and come in blue and red for Sonic and Knuckles, respectively. As limited editions, they have garnered interest, with one recipient even taking to Reddit to assess the value of these furry controllers.

The Edible Xbox Series X/S Controller

One of the most notable special edition Xbox controllers is the Wonka-inspired Xbox Series X/S console, unveiled in 2023. The console is designed to resemble a chocolate bar, though it isn’t actually edible. However, the controller is made entirely of 100% pure chocolate and wrapped in the iconic Willy Wonka gold foil.

This is unlikely to be the last of Xbox's inventive controller designs, as the company continues to push boundaries. With the customization options available through Xbox Design Lab, players can also create their own unique controllers without having to wait for Microsoft's next special edition release.
