Google Has Released the PaLM 2 AI Language Model

Google announces the PaLM 2 AI language model, which is already used by 25 Google services. / PaLM 2 is Google's most recent AI language model. According to the corporation, it is already being used across its software suite and powers its experimental chatbot, Bard.Google has released PaLM 2, its latest AI language model that competes with other systems such as OpenAI's GPT-4.[1]

"PaLM 2 models are stronger in logic and reasoning, thanks to broad training in logic and reasoning," Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated onstage at the company's I/O conference. "It's also been trained on multilingual text spanning over 100 languages."Google senior research director Slav Petrov told journalists in a roundtable before to the model's announcement at Google's I/O conference that PaLM 2 is substantially better at a variety of text-based tasks, including reasoning, coding, and translation. "It is significantly better than PaLM 1 [announced in April 2022]," Petrov remarked.[1]

Figure 1 shows According to Google, PaLM 2 processed a broader data collection as part of its pre-training than its predecessor, including scientific papers, web pages, and mathematical formulas. As a result, PaLM 2 performs better in common sense reasoning, mathematics, and logic. Developers can register to utilise the PaLM 2 model or use it in Vertex AI.[2]

Google also stated that PaLM 2 is quicker and more efficient than prior models, and that it is available in four sizes to accommodate a variety of use cases, allowing PaLM 2 to be fine-tuned to support entire classes of products. PaLM 2 is already powering over 25 Google products and features.[2]

These are some examples:

  • The creative AI platform Bard. PaLM 2 also drives the Bard coding update, which assists developers in coding.
  • Workspace features for Gmail and Google Docs, as well as organisational features for Google Sheets.
  • Med-Palm 2 is a broad language model for healthcare use.
  • Sec-PaLM 2, a PaLM 2 variant for security use cases.
  • Duet is an AI-powered collaborator for AI Cloud.

Google refers to PaLM as a family of models that includes Codey as well as Med-PaLM 2, the company's model focusing on medical knowledge. There is also Sec-PaLM, a version focusing on security use cases, and a smaller PaLM 2 model that can run on smartphones, which could possibly open up PaLM to more privacy-centric use cases, though Google did not commit to a timescale. Google claims that this model can handle 20 tokens per second, which isn't particularly quick but may be adequate for some use cases (Google didn't specify which phone it tested this on).[3]

It's no secret that Google has adopted a methodical approach to introducing these AI technologies, which the firm recognises. At the same time, Google's normal statement on this is that the business wants to build these technologies responsibly and with safety in mind. Of course, the corporation argues the same thing regarding PaLM. We certainly don't know how well it runs and handles edge circumstances because we couldn't test it prior to today's announcement.[3]
