A groundbreaking new device could soon replace traditional, bulky spectrometers—fitting powerful analytical capabilities into your smartphone. This tiny tool could enable on-the-go material analysis, medical diagnostics, and more, right from your pocket. At the heart of the innovation is a miniature photodetector that shifts its light sensitivity using simple voltage adjustments, offering rapid, precise readings in a form factor smaller than a single pixel.

Shrinking Science: The Future of Portable Spectroscopy

Engineers have created an ultra-compact spectrometer that dramatically outperforms its size. Despite its tiny footprint, the device can accurately detect light across a wide spectrum—from ultraviolet to near-infrared. This leap in miniaturization paves the way for portable, high-resolution spectroscopic imaging and next-gen handheld diagnostic tools. Figure 1 shows mini spectrometer.

“Spectrometers help us decode the chemical and physical makeup of materials by analyzing how light interacts with them,” explains Brendan O’Connor, lead author and professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University. “While they’re indispensable in fields like manufacturing and biomedicine, today’s smallest versions are still relatively large. Our design brings powerful spectrometry into a whole new size class.”

“We’ve engineered a spectrometer that is fast, low-power, and sensitive across a broad spectrum of light,” says Brendan O’Connor, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at NC State [1]. “Our prototype spans just a few square millimeters—it could easily fit inside a smartphone. In fact, it could be reduced to the size of a single pixel.”

This innovation relies on a compact photodetector capable of tuning into different wavelengths of light after interaction with a material. By adjusting the applied voltage, researchers can finely tune the detector’s sensitivity to specific wavelengths.

Speed, Simplicity, and Sub-Volt Efficiency

By quickly sweeping through a small voltage range—less than one volt—the device can capture wavelength data in under a millisecond. A simple algorithm then reconstructs the full light spectrum passing through or reflected off the material, offering a precise spectral fingerprint.

“This method is both fast and power-efficient,” O’Connor notes. “It doesn’t need bulky optics or high voltage, and yet it delivers impressive spectral resolution.”

Lab-Grade Accuracy in a Microscopic Package

In trials, the device performed on par with traditional spectrometers in terms of accuracy and demonstrated sensitivity levels matching those of commercial photodetectors.

“Our long-term vision is to bring spectrometry to everyday consumers,” says O’Connor. “The small size and low energy requirements make this ideal for mobile integration. It also opens the door to accessible imaging and microscopic spectroscopy—tools that have traditionally been limited to research labs.”
