An official announcement for the Nintendo Switch 2 could be coming later this month. With the Nintendo Switch being over seven years old, a refresh is overdue. Rumors about a successor to Nintendo's most successful home console have been circulating for years, and they’re now intensifying.

It's unclear whether the new console will be a straightforward sequel with updated specs while retaining the hybrid functionality of the original, or if Nintendo will take a different approach. The name is also up in the air—could it be called Switch 2, Super Switch, New Nintendo Switch, or something entirely unexpected like Switch U? Only time will tell with Nintendo’s penchant for surprises.

Recent weeks have seen intense speculation about every detail of the upcoming gaming console. However, it's crucial to remember that Nintendo has confirmed very little information so far, as the company tends to operate on its own schedule. [1] That said, here are the rumors most likely to be accurate, according to industry analysis. Figure 1 shows Nintendo Switch 2.

When is the Nintendo Switch 2 expected to be announced?

As mentioned earlier, Nintendo often keeps its plans under wraps, so the exact timing of the console's announcement remains uncertain. However, there are strong predictions that it could happen sometime this month. This speculation is fueled by Nintendo's recent adjustments to its typical Nintendo Direct schedule to accommodate an event in September, as noted by Kotaku. Additionally, September is a significant month in the Japanese gaming calendar, with the Tokyo Game Show scheduled at the end of the month.

There have been “industry whispers” about a September reveal, with GamesIndustry.biz head Christopher Dring suggesting that something related to the Switch 2 could be happening this month. VGC editor-in-chief Andy Robinson also noted that many in the press have heard similar rumors, though he added that he wouldn’t bet his house on it.

Even Nintendo struggles to keep a major console release under wraps. Sourcing parts and managing shipments make it challenging to maintain secrecy. A senior analyst at MST Financial observed a spike in production equipment spending by Nintendo assembler Hosiden, which also points to a possible announcement in September.

When is the Nintendo Switch 2 expected to be released?

The release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 remains largely uncertain. While the exact timing is still speculative, Nintendo has confirmed that it will announce the console by March 2025. Some sources suggest a March release, aligning with the original Switch's launch date of March 17, 2017. However, other reports indicate a later release in 2025.

The timing of the announcement can offer clues about the release date. If the console is announced this year, a March release seems likely, as the original Switch was officially confirmed in October 2016. If the announcement is delayed until next year, a launch after April is more probable.

Will It Be a True Successor to the Switch?

Nintendo’s track record with console releases is known for its unpredictability. For instance, the Wii U followed the wildly successful Wii, and the Wii itself succeeded the more traditional GameCube. This suggests that the new console could be something unexpected rather than a straightforward successor to the Switch. However, it seems more likely that the upcoming release will adhere to a traditional approach, much like a true Switch 2.

Will the Nintendo Switch 2 Be Backwards Compatible?

If the new console is indeed a direct successor to the Switch, backwards compatibility becomes a significant concern. Given the Switch’s extensive library, gamers would expect to play their existing titles on the new system. Fortunately, multiple sources suggest that the new console will likely be fully backwards compatible, supporting both digital releases and physical cartridges. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser hinted at this during a previous interview, aiming to minimize the gap typically seen between console generations. Additionally, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has mentioned that the revamped account system will facilitate a smoother transition from the Switch to its successor.

What About the Specs?

Details about the Switch 2’s specifications are varied. One analyst claimed the console would feature an eight-core Cortex-A78AE processor, 8GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal eMMC storage. This would make it more powerful than the original Switch, which was already outdated in 2017. Another source suggested that the console might use an NVIDIA Tegra239 SoC, aligning with the current Switch’s use of NVIDIA chips. It’s also expected that the Switch 2 will support DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), allowing for high-resolution output while rendering games at a lower internal resolution.

Rumors about the display are conflicting. Some reports suggest an 8-inch LCD, while others propose a 7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. There are also discussions about the possibility of an OLED or Mini-LED screen, with Mini-LED being a likely choice for cost reasons.

How Much Will the Nintendo Switch 2 Cost?

Pricing details remain unclear, but historical patterns provide some insight. The original Switch launched at $300, a price point consistent with recent Nintendo consoles. However, there are rumors that the Switch 2 could be priced at $400 or more, which would put it on par with high-end consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Do We Know About Any Launch Games?

No specific launch titles have been confirmed yet. However, the long-awaited release of a 3D Mario adventure could be a major selling point. [2] Other possibilities include titles from Ubisoft and innovative games that leverage any new features of the console. A dual release of Metroid Prime 4, similar to previous releases like Breath of the Wild, is also a possibility.
