The PlayStation Portal Update Now Allows You to Connect to Public Wi-Fi
A PlayStation Portal update will be released on June 19, bringing several new enhancements to the gaming handheld. One major update will allow you to use the device in more places by connecting to public Wi-Fi networks found in locations like airports, hotels, and cafes. To access these public networks, you'll need to scan a QR code.

These public networks typically require additional validation steps. When using the PlayStation Portal to connect to one, you'll need to scan a QR code displayed on its screen using your smartphone. Afterward, you can complete the remaining validation steps on your mobile device. It's important to note that Sony recommends a Wi-Fi connection with at least 5Mbps speed for play, ideally aiming for a high-speed connection of 15Mbps for a smoother gaming experience. Sony has also introduced new visual feedback effects for the touchpad areas during remote play. Additionally, after installing the update, you'll be able to view the remaining battery level percentage on the status bar. This feature can be enabled in the PlayStation Portal settings and is useful for those who prefer numerical battery indicators over symbols.
The PlayStation Portal, launched in November 2023, has proven to be popular. It connects to a PS5 console via wireless technology known as PlayStation Link, facilitating seamless gaming sessions provided your internet connection meets the requirements. For those interested in purchasing one, GameSpot's PlayStation Portal restock guide offers information on availability from major retailers. However, it's important to consider that the device may not be suitable for everyone, as noted during hands-on testing.[2]
According to Michael Higham's hands-on feature on GameSpot, "With a limited use-case and inconsistent performance from remote play, as well as its infrequent utilization of the PS5 ecosystem, recommending the PlayStation Portal can be difficult. However, if the PS5 is your primary gaming platform and you have a strong internet connection at home, and if you frequently find yourself in situations where you want to play PS5 games without access to the connected TV, then the Portal can be quite useful."
