Full-formed as Mobile Number Portability, MNP allows users to change their telecom operators without changing their existing mobile number. It is important to note that a network switch from one operator to another operator does not impact the network reliability but rather offers improved network coverage service, economical tariff packs, attractive promotional packs, and others to a user. Figure 1 shows Mobile number portability (MNP) enables mobile telephone users to retain their mobile telephone numbers when changing from one mobile network operator to another. [1]

Benefits of MNP

The introduction of MNP, worked as a reason to push various telecom operators to serve the best telecom services to their users. Users, on the other hand, opted for MNP due to some common reasons listed below-

  • New subscribers are given attractive telecom services
  • Users can switch operator free of cost
  • There is no need to change the mobile number when you change the operator
  • Subscribers will get a new SIM card in the required size
  • The subscriber gets complete flexibility to change [2] plan from prepaid to postpaid and vice versa
  • Existing service provider might try to offer better services and deals

To port mobile number

  1. First, send an SMS in the following format- PORT followed by space to 1900. The message would look something like- PORT <9899999999> to 1900. Make sure to send the MNP SMS from the same mobile number that you wish to port from.
  2. Next, you will receive a Unique Porting Code (8 digit) from your current telecom operator on your mobile number. The UPC will be valid for 4 days across India except for Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and North East where the code is valid for up to 30 days. 3. It is important to submit the UPC at the earliest to your new operator.
  3. Next, connect with your nearest service operator or visit the telecom operator’s office/store.
  4. Then submit the 8-digit UPC number along with the documents required for the mobile number portability.
  5. The subscriber will be charged a small sum of Rs. 5.74 by the new operator.
  6. Next, the new telecom operator who you port your mobile number to will send a request to your old service provider for background verification of any current or outstanding mobile bill payments.
  7. Once the verification process is completed, your new telecom operator will notify you of the time and date for the mobile SIM port process via SMS.
  8. During the transition process of porting your mobile number, your mobile phone services will remain suspended for approx. 2 hours.
  9. You can now insert the new SIM card to activate your mobile number with the new network service provider. [3]
