Synology is making a bold move in the surveillance market with the launch of C2 Surveillance, a cloud-native Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS) platform that removes the need for local servers and complex licensing. Built for quick deployment, dependable performance, and seamless multi-site scalability, this new service integrates smoothly into Synology’s growing C2 cloud ecosystem—bringing its trusted surveillance solutions into a fully cloud-managed environment.

Surveillance Without the Server Room

Setting up traditional surveillance systems often involves significant effort—purchasing hardware, configuring storage, managing camera licenses, and connecting devices across multiple locations. Synology’s C2 Surveillance changes the game by offering a streamlined, cloud-based solution that simplifies the entire process. Figure 1 shows Synology Introduces C2 Surveillance: Cloud Monitoring That Grows with Your Business.

The system is completely server-less and license-free, enabling administrators to add cameras directly through the cloud interface without worrying about device limits or extra licensing fees. This makes it an ideal solution for businesses with multiple locations—especially where deploying infrastructure at each site is impractical or too expensive.

Plug-and-Play Setup

C2 Surveillance prioritizes ease of use. Its installation process is so straightforward that even users without technical expertise can have a site operational within minutes, whether on a desktop or mobile device.

The user-friendly Synology interface guides administrators through camera registration and setup, including AI-powered detection features like motion and people detection. These advanced functions can be configured easily without specialized knowledge, making sophisticated surveillance accessible to smaller businesses or teams with limited IT support.

Resilience by Design

A standout feature of C2 Surveillance is Synology’s “continuity-first architecture.” Simply put, the system continues recording even if the internet connection drops. Each camera records directly to a local microSD card (edge recording), ensuring no footage is lost during outages. Once connectivity is restored, these recordings sync automatically to the C2 Cloud for secure off-site backup. Additionally, a failover offline mode allows users to monitor camera feeds locally—critical for environments where downtime is not an option.

Security is a top priority. The platform employs AES-128 encryption, multi-factor authentication, and detailed permission controls to manage access. From a compliance perspective, Synology adheres to ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, and NDAA standards—reassuring credentials for enterprise IT and legal teams.

Designed for the Distributed Workplace

As hybrid work models and distributed operations become standard, Synology is betting surveillance needs will adapt accordingly. C2 Surveillance is built with smart scalability in mind. Administrators can manage cameras across multiple sites from a single centralized interface, removing the need to remote into each location individually. Integration with Windows Active Directory allows businesses to manage user identities and permissions through existing systems, while role-based access controls enable fine-tuned delegation of authority.

For bandwidth-sensitive environments, a low-bandwidth mode reduces video transmission data usage by up to 50% with minimal impact on quality—ideal for rural or satellite offices on limited networks.

A Unified Ecosystem

Synology is well-known for its NAS solutions and on-premises surveillance software like Surveillance Station, which remains a staple for many customers. The launch of C2 Surveillance complements this lineup by giving organizations the flexibility to choose between on-premises, hybrid, or fully cloud-based deployments.

This move reflects Synology’s broader strategy to expand its C2 ecosystem into a comprehensive cloud services suite—covering storage, backup, identity management, and now surveillance. By doing so, Synology simplifies the IT landscape for SMEs and distributed enterprises while making a strong case for why the C2 cloud should be a key player in infrastructure discussions.

C2 Surveillance Availability

C2 Surveillance is slated for release later this year, with more details expected soon on Synology’s website. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the license-free model suggests a potentially attractive total cost of ownership for growing businesses seeking to scale monitoring capabilities without increasing IT staff or hardware investments.
