Huawei Leads Industry Partners in Official Release of SRv6 Compression Standard RFC 9800
On June 30, 2025, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) released RFC 9800 — a new standard for Compressed SRv6 Segment List Encoding, developed by Huawei in collaboration with industry partners. This milestone marks strong industry consensus on SRv6 compression and signals a transition from standardization to widespread global deployment.

RFC 9800 introduces the REPLACE and NEXT flavors for compressing 128-bit SRv6 Segment Identifiers (SIDs) down to 32 or 16 bits, significantly reducing header overhead. This advancement not only enhances SRv6 transmission efficiency but also resolves the long-standing challenge of excessive packet header size in live network environments. Since its introduction in 2013, SRv6’s commercial adoption has been limited by large packet header overhead and the absence of a unified compression standard. The release of RFC 9800 marks the formal standardization of SRv6— a key innovation in IPv6 Enhanced—and signals broad industry agreement, paving the way for faster commercial deployment. G-SRv6 innovations and accomplishments have been documented in China’s “Origin and Development of Basic Internet Network Technologies.” To date, over 40 leading device and test meter vendors have adopted RFC 9800 commercially, establishing it not only as an official standard but also as the de facto standard in the market.
SRv6 currently delivers high-quality experiences to nearly one-fifth of global Internet users, supporting key sectors like finance, healthcare, and education. The commercial rollout of RFC 9800 is set to accelerate SRv6’s widespread adoption worldwide [1]. Huawei fully endorses the REPLACE and NEXT compression methods defined in RFC 9800 and, as a leading device vendor, aims to meet diverse network needs in its global commercialization efforts. Committed to original innovation, Huawei will continue collaborating with industry partners to drive large-scale deployment and innovative uses of IPv6 Enhanced/SRv6 while exploring new advancements in network communications.
