Emergency Windows Server Update Resolves Hyper-V VM Freezing and Restart Problems

Microsoft has rolled out an emergency update to fix a critical issue affecting some Hyper-V virtual machines running on Windows Server 2022, which could freeze or reboot unexpectedly.

The problem primarily impacts Azure confidential virtual machines—VMs specifically designed to secure data during processing, not just during storage or transmission.

To resolve the issue, Microsoft released the out-of-band (OOB) update KB5061906 for Windows Server 2022. This cumulative update replaces all previous updates for the operating system.

According to Microsoft, the update addresses "an issue in the direct send path for a guest physical address (GPA)," which could cause confidential VMs on Hyper-V to intermittently hang or restart, potentially affecting service availability and requiring manual recovery.

Microsoft clarified that the issue is mostly confined to Azure confidential VMs and is unlikely to impact standard Hyper-V deployments, except in limited preview or pre-production environments.

The KB5061906 update is not available via Windows Update and won't install automatically [1]. IT administrators must download and apply it manually using the standalone MSU package from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Microsoft recommends applying this emergency update if the May 2025 security update (KB5058385) has not yet been installed and your environment includes Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V instances. Organizations unaffected by this specific issue do not need to install the update.

This follows a pattern of emergency fixes. Just last month, Microsoft released urgent updates to fix a problem that prevented Windows containers from launching on Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025.

In October 2023, updates for Windows Server 2019 and 2022 caused VM boot failures and “failed to start” errors. Similarly, emergency patches in January and December 2022 addressed issues that blocked the creation and startup of Hyper-V VMs.
