Beaverlab, a tech company, has initiated a Kickstarter campaign to secure funds for the Excope DT1, a smart super-telephoto camera equipped with a 400-mm zoom lens. This device collaborates with smartphones to capture distant images effectively.

The concept of a hybrid camera system integrating interchangeable lenses with smartphone technology is not novel. Established companies such as Sony, Kodak, and Olympus, as well as startups like Alice Camera, have previously explored similar ventures.

Additionally, it includes 64 GB of built-in storage, dual-band Wi-Fi for wireless data transmission at 150 Mbps, and a 3,000-mAh battery to preserve your smartphone's power. Electronic image stabilization and an onboard gyro work together to mitigate the impact of camera shake.

The system enables real-time adjustments of light sensitivity, white balance, exposure, contrast, saturation, and sharpness via the companion app. It features DSP algorithm enhancement and image denoising capabilities, supporting 4K HDR video at up to 30 frames per second or burst shooting of photos at 25 fps. Additionally, it includes monochrome night vision capabilities.

While other lens-cameras offer various lens options, Beaverlab currently offers two proprietary options. The f/4 aperture Lens 40, with a 40-mm focal length, provides 3.6x optical magnification and 20x digital zoom. Conversely, the f/8 aperture Lens 400, with a 400-mm focal length, offers 36x optical magnification and 200x digital zoom. Both lenses feature a manual focus ring and are constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum.

The device features a built-in phone holder that securely grips the user's smartphone and can be adjusted for optimal viewing angles. It includes a tripod mount for added stability during stationary use. On the side, there's a grip housing a power button, status lights, and shutter release. The onboard battery charges via USB-C, and a power bank can extend usage away from a power outlet.

When equipped with the Lens 400, the DT1 weighs 1.32 lb (0.6 kg), making it relatively lightweight for easy portability. Since the smartphone running the companion app connects to the device via Wi-Fi, users can position the DT1 in a secluded area and utilize the smartphone as a wireless monitor and trigger, ideal for capturing elusive wildlife. Additionally, the app includes features for on-device image editing.

The Excope DT1 is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter, offering super early pledges for the Lens 400 kit at US$199. The Lens 40 kit is priced at $219, while a double-lens kit is available for $269. Standard cautionary notes regarding crowdfunding apply, but with the campaign already funded, shipping is projected to commence from July. Further details can be found in the accompanying video.
