The information technology industry is experiencing a boom like never before, and more and more brands are looking to expand in this area because of the immense amount of potential. Information technology has various applications, which is also why it has proven to be such a beneficial key component in the entire structure that industries now have. With the growing importance of this, it becomes important to understand the important aspects of this industry and the key components that make it the revolutionary tool that it is. [1]

Figure 1 shows It’s not surprising that companies across the globe heavily rely on their IT departments. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics notes that IT employment occupations will grow 13 percent between 2020 and 2030. What’s more, the International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the technology industry as a whole will surpass >$5.3 trillion in 2022. [2] 

Emerging Technology Trends is a series of thematic publications on emerging technology. Every year a specific emerging technology, and its impact on development, is presented. The series promotes the wide scale deployment of emerging technology to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. It also shared information on emerging technology and facilitate the implementation and use of ICT technologies when necessary. The Emerging Technology Trends series will also discuss the development and evolution of emerging technology in developing countries. [3]

Cloud Computing

One of the most talked about concept in information technology is the cloud computing. Clouding computing is defined as utilization of computing services, i.e. software as well as hardware as a service over a network. Typically, this network is the internet.

Cloud computing offers 3 types of broad services mainly Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS).

Mobile Application

Another emerging trend within information technology is mobile applications (software application on Smart phone, tablet, etc.)

Mobile application or mobile app has become a success since its introduction. They are designed to run on Smartphone, tablets and other mobile devices. They are available as a download from various mobile operating systems like Apple, Blackberry, Nokia, etc. Some of the mobile app are available free where as some involve download cost. The revenue collected is shared between app distributor and app developer.

User Interfaces

User interface has undergone a revolution since introduction of touch screen. The touch screen capability has revolutionized way end users interact with application. Touch screen enables the user to directly interact with what is displayed and also removes any intermediate hand-held device like the mouse.

Touch screen capability is utilized in smart phones, tablet, information kiosks and other information appliances. [4]
