AWS Pledges NZ$7.5B for Renewable-Powered Cloud Expansion in New Zealand

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially opened its Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region, investing over NZ$7.5 billion (US$4.4 billion) in new data centers across the country. This expansion provides New Zealand businesses with local access to advanced cloud infrastructure, improving latency and ensuring compliance with data residency requirements.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, AWS Vice President of Infrastructure Services, stated that the new New Zealand region will meet rising cloud service demand and enable organizations of all sizes to speed up their digital transformation.

“With this launch, businesses in New Zealand can access AWS’s advanced technologies—including core cloud services, AI, and machine learning—while ensuring compliance with local data residency regulations.” Figure 1 shows AWS Launches New Zealand Region to Boost Cloud Services.

“Through our investment in New Zealand’s digital infrastructure, we aim to drive economic growth, encourage innovation, and strengthen the country’s position as a technology hub in the Asia Pacific region.”

Billion-Dollar Investment Boost

Amazon expects the AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region to add around NZ$10.8 billion (US$6.3 billion) to the country’s GDP over time and create over 1,000 full-time jobs annually in sectors like engineering, telecommunications, and data center operations. The project underscores New Zealand’s growing importance as a key digital hub in the Asia Pacific region.

The AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region includes three separate Availability Zones, each equipped with independent power, cooling, and security systems, connected via low-latency networks to ensure high availability and resilience. This launch expands AWS’s global presence to 120 Availability Zones across 38 regions.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called the AWS region launch a major milestone and a vote of confidence in the country’s business and innovation potential, noting it will drive growth, create jobs, and boost incomes. Graeme Muller, CEO of NZTech, also described the launch as an exciting development for New Zealand’s tech sector.

“This investment in digital infrastructure, combined with Amazon’s focus on digital skills, can accelerate New Zealand tech businesses and enable New Zealanders to access well-paid, secure, and highly skilled technology jobs across industries such as agriculture, finance, retail, professional services, government, and more.”

Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Initiatives

In line with global sustainability targets, the AWS New Zealand Region will run entirely on renewable energy from day one, backed by a partnership with Mercury NZ’s Turitea South wind farm. This effort supports Amazon’s broader goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under The Climate Pledge. Advanced technologies make AWS infrastructure up to 4.1 times more energy-efficient than traditional enterprise data centers, according to an Accenture study, significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Boosting Cloud Adoption and Technology Skills

Alongside building infrastructure, AWS is expanding skills development programs in New Zealand. Initiatives like AWS Academy and AWS Skill Builder have already trained over 50,000 people, and a Memorandum of Understanding with the government aims to train 100,000 in total, focusing on preparing the local workforce for emerging tech roles. AWS serves organizations across finance, retail, and media, while partners such as Accenture and Datacom support enterprise and government digital transformation efforts.

Strengthening the Region’s Digital Future

AWS’ investment in New Zealand is part of a wider strategy to boost regional connectivity, building on existing assets like the AWS Direct Connect site and Local Zone in Auckland. This positions New Zealand as a key hub in the Asia Pacific digital network, fostering faster technological innovation [1]. By combining advanced infrastructure, renewable energy initiatives, and strategic partnerships, AWS is laying the groundwork for New Zealand to play an increasingly central role in the region’s digital growth.
