Unveiled at the Business Unleashed event, the SAP Business Data Cloud seamlessly integrates data from SAP and external applications, enabling organizations to manage data engineering and analytics more efficiently. The platform leverages Databricks technology to support data engineering, machine learning, and AI workloads, enhancing AI development across the enterprise. SAP tackles challenges in enterprise AI implementation
According to SAP, companies face significant challenges in scaling AI projects, mainly due to integration issues between data sources and concerns about data quality, which hinder the realization of returns on AI investments. These challenges influenced the development of the Business Data Cloud.
Muhammad Alam, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, stated, “Our customers tell us they're finding it difficult to implement and extract value from AI within their organizations. The challenge lies in obtaining reliable, high-quality datasets across the enterprise to power AI. Although many have completed hundreds of proofs of concepts, they struggle to move them into effective production.”
The platform generates data products from SAP applications like S/4HANA, Ariba, and SuccessFactors while preserving business context from the source systems. This method allows organizations to access data without needing extraction processes.
For financial analysis, the platform enables the integration of external data sources with internal financial records [1]. For instance, a chief financial officer can assess the impact of inflation on profitability by linking consumer price indices with general ledger accounts and cost center data.
“Unless this data is harmonized across business processes and managed with proper governance throughout the organization, its value significantly diminishes. Customers invest millions of dollars attempting to unify this data in a way that aligns the data model with governance and quality standards, but achieving this is extremely challenging.”
SAP expands Joule AI capabilities with its new data platform
The new platform enhances SAP's Joule generative AI assistant by providing access to enterprise data and the SAP Knowledge Graph solution, enabling Joule to manage workflows across various business functions.
SAP has introduced Joule agents for finance and sales departments. Finance agents manage claims and cash flow, while sales agents address customer disputes and inquiries. The company plans to expand these functionalities across its Business Suite applications.
At the Business Unleashed event, SAP also unveiled a new agent builder tool that allows customers to create custom AI agents. This tool integrates SAP's process expertise into guided workflows, enabling users to connect agents with enterprise data sources.
These custom agents can work alongside SAP’s pre-built Joule agents, allowing organizations to tailor the platform's capabilities to meet specific business needs.
The partnership aims to accelerate enterprise AI adoption.
The partnership between SAP and Databricks responds to increasing demand from organizations looking to implement AI capabilities while retaining control over their data assets. SAP’s strategy focuses on flexible integration with existing enterprise systems.
The platform empowers organizations without existing data infrastructure to adopt AI capabilities. Muhammad Alam explained, “We recognize that many customers haven’t chosen a data platform yet. SAP Business Data Cloud enables them to not only utilize SAP data but also integrate non-SAP data. With the combined power of SAP and Databricks tools, they can generate insights and apply AI effectively.”
