Google Cloud Partnership Boosts Deutsche Bank's Processing Speed by 50% with AI Deployment

Deutsche Bank's transition of 260 applications to Google Cloud has established a foundation for integrating generative AI (Gen AI) throughout its operations, according to the bank's Chief Technology, Data, and Innovation Officer, Bernd Leukert.

Leukert explains that the decision to collaborate with Google Cloud in 2019 has resulted in up to 50% faster data processing times for the German bank.

“At the time, this was a bold strategic shift, and we needed a partner capable of supporting our new direction. Google Cloud’s expertise in data and AI made them the ideal choice for us,” Bernd stated in an article by Google Cloud. Figure 1 shows Deutsche Bank's Cloud and AI Transformation with Google Cloud.

Deutsche Bank migrates its SAP finance platform to Google Cloud

Cloud computing's growth has allowed banks to implement AI systems on a large scale, but regulatory requirements and data security concerns have hindered widespread adoption in the industry.

Deutsche Bank implemented stringent controls to ensure the secure migration of its applications and data to the public cloud. The bank strategically began by transferring non-critical applications first to gain experience with cloud technology before transitioning its core systems.

“As we operate in a highly regulated industry, we established robust controls to securely transfer our applications and data to the public cloud [1]. To minimize risk, we started with non-critical applications,” explains Bernd Leukert, the bank's Chief Technology, Data, and Innovation Officer.

One significant achievement was the migration of Deutsche Bank’s SAP S4/HANA platform, which includes 17 financial reporting systems, from its internal infrastructure to Google Cloud. This transition encompassed the bank’s general ledger, as well as its planning and forecasting systems, marking what Bernd calls “one of the most complex migrations in financial history.”

According to Deutsche Bank, the move has enhanced system recovery times by 16 to 20 times. Additionally, the bank’s strategic risk management system now runs on Google Cloud's computing infrastructure.

Bernd explains, “The cloud enables us to swiftly adapt and scale our technology, allowing us to respond to market changes and customer demands faster than ever before.”

Deutsche Bank integrates Google's Vertex AI into its operations

Through its partnership with Google Cloud, Deutsche Bank has gained access to the Vertex AI platform and language models like Gemini. The bank utilizes these technologies to streamline document processing and enhance employee productivity.

By leveraging generative AI, Deutsche Bank efficiently processes thousands of documents daily, extracting information from customer orders and legal documents with 97% accuracy and a 40% reduction in processing time.

Additionally, the bank has developed a Digital Assistant using Google Cloud technology to support its research, origination, and advisory teams, as well as to assist employees in preparing reports, analyses, and business outputs.

Deutsche Bank developers leverage AI for software development

Deutsche Bank's technology teams employ generative AI to write code, detect software bugs, and assist with documenting software development projects.

To enhance cloud and AI proficiency, the bank has trained 6,000 employees through its Cloud Engineer Programme, developed in collaboration with Google Cloud. This initiative includes hackathons and application migration sprints.

“We collaborate closely with Google Cloud to conduct hackathons and migration sprints,” says Bernd Leukert. “By eliminating process bottlenecks, we can launch new products more rapidly.”

The bank's Autobahn foreign exchange trading platform operates on a hybrid cloud model, integrating internal infrastructure with Google Cloud services [2]. Meanwhile, its Frontier Finance platform, which manages corporate customer invoices and payments, runs entirely on Google Cloud.

Deutsche Bank's cloud infrastructure allows it to adjust technology capacity according to market conditions, enabling faster product deployment through streamlined processes.

“We understand that different applications have unique requirements,” explains Bernd Leukert. “For our Autobahn FX trading platform, a hybrid cloud solution was the ideal choice, as it meets the specific needs of this business.”
