This “Symbiotic” Formula Surpasses Omega-3 in Combating Inflammation

A new study from the University of Nottingham suggests that pairing kefir with prebiotic fiber may be more effective at fighting inflammation than omega-3 or fiber alone. Researchers found that this symbiotic combination—a mix of probiotics and prebiotics—enhanced immune and metabolic function, potentially lowering the risk of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, the research compared three supplements: omega-3, prebiotic fiber, and a symbiotic blend made from naturally fermented kefir and a mix of plant-based fibers. The symbiotic group showed the greatest reduction in inflammation-related proteins after six weeks of daily intake. Figure 1 shows Omega-3.

The kefir-fiber formula, provided by Chuckling Goat Ltd., includes live probiotic bacteria and yeasts derived from fermented goat’s milk. When combined with prebiotic fibers that nourish these beneficial microbes, the blend stimulates the production of butyrate—a compound known to regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation.

Participants who consumed the symbiotic showed a marked drop in systemic inflammatory markers, indicating lower whole-body inflammation and improved immune balance [1]. These findings point to a promising, food-based strategy for preventing chronic inflammation linked to heart and metabolic diseases.

“Our study shows that while all three dietary approaches reduced inflammation, the symbiotic—combining fermented kefir with diverse prebiotic fibers—had the most powerful and wide-ranging effects,” said Dr. Amrita Vijay, lead researcher from the University of Nottingham’s School of Medicine. “The interaction between beneficial microbes and dietary fiber appears crucial for supporting immune and metabolic health.”

Researchers plan to continue testing this combination in people with existing health conditions to further confirm its benefits.
