New Triple-Action Supplement Combats Anemia—Gentle on the Stomach

Iron-deficiency anemia—one of the most common nutritional disorders worldwide—can sap energy, cause headaches, and even trigger unusual cravings like chewing ice. While standard iron tablets are often prescribed to restore iron levels, they frequently leave behind unabsorbed iron that can irritate the stomach and disrupt gut health.

Now, researchers have designed a smarter solution. As reported in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, a new 3-in-1 supplement blends iron with probiotics and prebiotics to improve absorption and reduce side effects. In tests on anemic mice, this triple-action formula replenished healthy iron levels without causing inflammation or disturbing the gut microbiome.

“By advancing biomaterial-based iron delivery, this research offers a transformative approach to address anemia, directly contributing to improved nutrition and long-term public health,” explains study author Poonam Sagar.

Anemia develops when the body lacks enough red blood cells to transport oxygen effectively—often due to insufficient dietary iron. Traditional iron pills can correct the deficiency, but much of the iron remains unabsorbed, leading to gut irritation [1]. Pairing iron with probiotics helps, but the new approach goes further by adding prebiotics, which nourish the beneficial bacteria that aid digestion. Figure 1 shows 3-in-1 Supplement.

The research team, led by Nitin Kumar Singhal and Sagar, created a supplement combining iron complexes, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (a probiotic), and millet-derived dietary fiber (a prebiotic). Tests showed the formulation was biocompatible and highly effective in restoring hemoglobin and iron transport in mice, while keeping gut inflammation low and microbial balance intact.

Although human trials are still needed, these results suggest the next generation of iron supplements could soon treat anemia more effectively—without the stomach discomfort that often comes with traditional options.
