Android 17 Rolls Out Stronger Safeguards Against Scam Calls
Android 17 is set to introduce a major wave of privacy and security upgrades aimed at protecting users from banking scams, device theft, malware, and invasive apps. Expected to launch next month, the update expands Google’s focus on stronger mobile security across the Android ecosystem.
One of the headline features targets banking scam calls. Google is adding protections against scammers who spoof caller IDs to impersonate banks and trick users into revealing sensitive information or transferring money. Android will work directly with supported banking apps to detect suspicious calls and automatically disconnect them if fraud is suspected. Early support will include banking platforms such as Revolut, Itaú Unibanco, and Nubank. Google says the feature will also reach devices running Android 11 and later.

Android’s Live Threat Detection system is also being expanded to better identify harmful app behavior, including SMS forwarding abuse, hidden accessibility overlays, apps disguising their icons, and suspicious background activity. Meanwhile, Advanced Protection mode will introduce stricter controls by limiting accessibility permissions, disabling certain risky features, and adding scam detection for chat notifications. To combat phone theft, Android 17 enhances the “Mark as lost” feature by allowing users to secure devices using biometric authentication in addition to a PIN or password. Once a device is marked lost, thieves will be blocked from disabling tracking features or accessing Quick Settings, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections. Theft protection tools will also roll out to select Android 10+ devices in markets including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
The update also includes several additional security improvements. Chrome for Android will scan downloaded APK files for malware before installation, while Android will better protect SMS one-time passwords by hiding them from most apps for several hours. Android 17 will also reduce password-guessing attempts by increasing delays after failed unlock tries.
Privacy features are receiving upgrades as well, including temporary precise-location sharing, improved location access transparency, and a new contact picker that grants apps limited access to selected contacts only [1]. The update also introduces AISeal with pKVM, a hardware-backed system designed to isolate AI-related data processing for greater security.
Some advanced features, such as Android build verification and certain AI protections, will first appear on Google Pixel devices before expanding more broadly. Google is also adding post-quantum cryptography protections to help future-proof Android security against emerging cyber threats. While rollout schedules may differ depending on device manufacturers, Android 17 represents one of Google’s most comprehensive security-focused Android updates in recent years.
