At SID Display Week, Samsung Display has unveiled a remarkable array of OLED innovations, showcasing the future of display technology. Among the highlights is a remarkable laptop screen that boasts the ability to expand, providing users with a whopping five times the display real estate. This breakthrough feature opens up exciting new possibilities for multitasking and immersive content consumption. Additionally, Samsung has introduced a sensor-packed panel with advanced capabilities, including fingerprint reading and the ability to monitor blood pressure. These advancements exemplify Samsung's commitment to pushing the boundaries of what displays can do, offering users enhanced functionality and an elevated user experience. [1]

Figure 1 shows Samsung Rollable Flex OLED. Samsung Display isn't giving too much away on the Rollable Flex OLED panel, but it reportedly expands from 49 mm (1.93 in) in height to 254.4 mm (10 in) – that's 12.4 diagonal inches at full stretch – and the resolution is given as FHD+ (1,200 x 1,920 pixels). [1]

Samsung's rollable OLED panel aims to revolutionize the portability of tablet PCs and laptops, with the potential for future applications in tablets and smartphones. The current prototype unfurls from an "O-shaped axis like a scroll," offering a unique form factor. However, it is noticeably wider and chunkier than conventional laptop displays or computer monitors. Information regarding its weight is currently unavailable, and further details may be disclosed closer to a potential product launch. [1]

For those unable to attend the 60th SID Display Week at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Samsung Display has provided a short video showcasing the prototype in action. One notable innovation demonstrated is the integration of a light-sensing organic photodiode directly into the OLED panel. This advancement enables fingerprint scanning to be performed anywhere on the screen surface, eliminating the need for a dedicated under-display fingerprint sensor. Additionally, the Sensor OLED Display prototype showcases its ability to measure health metrics by analyzing subtle differences in reflected light caused by contractions in blood vessels. By placing two fingers on the display, the sensor can provide information such as heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels. [1]

"To accurately measure a person’s blood pressure, it is necessary to measure the blood pressure of both arms," said the company. "The Sensor OLED display can simultaneously sense the fingers of both hands, providing more accurate health information than existing wearable devices." [1]

A new take on the Flex In & Out phone is also on show, which can fold inward to protect the display, like the Galaxy Fold4 for example, or outward to offer two displays back to back across the hinge – "opening up the possibility of lighter and thinner foldable phones." [1]

In addition to the aforementioned innovations, Samsung Display is showcasing other members of its Flex concept lineup at Display Week. This includes the latest iterations of the Flex Hybrid folding and sliding display. These concepts offer glimpses into potential future commercial applications and demonstrate Samsung's ongoing exploration of flexible display technology. Another notable concept is the Slidable Flex Solo, a 13-inch tablet that can expand to a generous 17-inch screen. While these concepts hint at exciting possibilities, Samsung has not released any official confirmation regarding upcoming product development or expected timelines. Nonetheless, these demonstrations provide a tantalizing glimpse into the potential future of display technology. [1]
