Quantum Computer Runs Error Free Calculations

A team of Austrian and German scientists has constructed a 16-quantum bit (qubit) computer that runs error-free calculations. The researchers developed a series of quantum gates to serve as components of more sophisticated computations, which prevent errors within even the most complex.

Figure 1 shows that A quantum computer made from charged atoms can catch its own errors when performing any operation – a significant step in the direction of extra dependable and sensible quantum computer systems.

Conventional computer systems routinely flag and proper their own errors, so to actually outperform them, quantum computer systems must do the identical. However, quantum results could make errors cascade rapidly via the qubits, or quantum bits, that make up these units.

Lukas Postler on the University of Innsbruck in Austria and his colleagues have now constructed a quantum computer that runs any calculation without errors.

Any operation of a quantum computer could be damaged down into less complicated computations referred to as quantum gates. These could be utilized to a qubit by hitting it with a laser to alter its quantum state.

They corralled 14 calcium ions with electric fields, forming two logical qubits composed of seven entangled ions each; two additional qubits flagged erroneous computations requiring correction. [1]

While this setup may be useful for certain types of quantum computers, the difficulty in programming error correction into these devices significantly varies among quantum computer designs, says Christopher Monroe at the Joint Quantum Institute.

For quantum computers that use superconducting qubits, such as Google’s Sycamore, error correction from the get-go requires devices much larger than 16 qubits, he says.

In 2021, Monroe and colleagues used 13 trapped ions to build a single logical qubit that stored data unexpectedly accurately also thanks to error correction. He says this new quantum computer is not yet big enough or reliable enough to tackle any practical real-world problem.

“Different research groups are putting the pieces together on how to do that with trapped ion qubits,” he says. “This new experiment is another piece of that puzzle.” [3]
