Developed in Japan, OQTOPUS is a fully customizable, all-in-one quantum computing operating system now available on GitHub. A collaboration between the University of Osaka, Fujitsu, SEC, and TIS, it stands as one of the most comprehensive open-source initiatives in quantum computing.

OQTOPUS offers flexibility and customization, enabling users to adapt the system to their specific needs. Its release aims to accelerate quantum computing adoption by simplifying setup and operation, especially in cloud environments.

Previously, universities and companies needed custom software for cloud-based quantum computing. OQTOPUS simplifies this by offering a complete, ready-to-use operating system, streamlining setup and execution to make quantum computing more accessible [1]. Early Adoption and Future Developments

Furthermore, the University of Osaka's quantum computing cloud service has started incorporating OQTOPUS into its operations, while Fujitsu Limited plans to offer it to research partners utilizing its quantum computers in the latter half of 2025.

Looking ahead, the research team aims to further advance quantum computing by continuously expanding OQTOPUS’s capabilities and fostering a global user community [2]. Dr. Keisuke Fujii from the Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology (QIQB) at the University of Osaka stated, “This will help standardize various quantum software and systems while driving the development of groundbreaking quantum applications.”

The study was supported by funding from the Japan Science and Technology Agency and the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology.
