Meta Will Alert Parents If Teens Discuss Self-Harm
Meta is expanding its safety measures for teen users with a new feature that alerts parents if AI conversations suggest a teenager may be considering self-harm or suicide. The company is also developing the ability to contact emergency services when a user appears to be at imminent risk of harming themselves, aiming to strengthen protections for young users and reassure parents and regulators about the safety of its platforms.
Meta has introduced a new safeguard that notifies parents or guardians when an underage user's conversations with Meta AI indicate a risk of suicide or self-harm. In addition to directing teens to crisis helplines and encouraging them to seek help from a trusted adult, the company will provide caregivers with resources and guidance on how to support their children.

Meta has developed a dedicated AI system to detect conversations that may indicate a risk of self-harm or suicide. Every AI-flagged chat is manually reviewed before parents are notified to reduce false alarms, though alerts may still be sent when a teen's intent is unclear to prioritize safety. The feature is now available for Instagram parental supervision users in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, with a global rollout planned by the end of the year. Meta is developing a feature that could contact emergency services if a user's conversation with Meta AI indicates they may be at immediate risk of suicide, regardless of whether they are a minor or an adult. The move follows similar efforts in the AI industry, including OpenAI's Trusted Contact feature for ChatGPT, which lets users designate someone the company can notify if they appear to be at risk of self-harm.
Meta has extended Instagram's Limited Content setting to Meta AI, ensuring that teens with the feature enabled receive more restricted AI interactions involving sensitive topics such as self-harm and mature content [1]. The update is part of the company's broader effort to strengthen safety protections for young users across its AI services.
