The AI agent will now write Python code to provide deeper insights. If you're a fan of data visualization, you'll appreciate Google's latest update to Google Sheets. The company has started enhancing the Gemini side panel, introduced earlier this summer, to enable the AI agent to generate more detailed insights from your spreadsheet data.

By using the new "Analyze for insights" shortcut in Google Sheets, Gemini will analyze your data for "contextual trends, patterns, and correlations between different variables," as stated by Google. The AI will also generate charts from your data, which you can insert as static images into your document [1]. Depending on the complexity of your request, Gemini will utilize Python code to process and provide the insights. On the right-hand side, the Gemini side panel employs Python to analyze the data within the user's spreadsheet. Figure 1 shows Data Analysis in Google Sheets.

There are some limitations to the current implementation of this feature. For example, once a chart is inserted, it cannot be modified. Additionally, any charts generated by Gemini won't be directly linked to the data, meaning they won’t automatically update if changes are made to the spreadsheet.

In addition, Google advises users to be as specific as possible when prompting Gemini for data insights. For the most accurate results, the company recommends ensuring that your data is consistently formatted, with clear headers and no missing values.

To access the updated Gemini side panel in Sheets, you need to subscribe to Google One AI Premium or be part of a Business or Enterprise Workspace plan (Standard or Plus) [2]. Additionally, users with Gemini Education, Gemini Education Premium, Gemini Business, or Gemini Enterprise add-ons will have access. Google anticipates completing the rollout of this feature by February 20, so it may not be immediately available in your version of Sheets.
