Solar Secures Another Victory as Microsoft Adds 475 MW For AI Data Centers

Microsoft has consistently invested in solar energy. In February, it secured 389 megawatts from three solar projects in Illinois and Texas. Additionally, late last year, the company took a leading role in a $9 billion renewable energy coalition organized by Acadia. While tech companies have been showing growing interest in nuclear power, the cost and speed advantages of renewables continue to drive solar investments.

Renewable energy alone lacks the consistency of nuclear or natural gas, but developers are increasingly integrating battery storage to ensure round-the-clock electricity.

Though hybrid power plants—combining renewables with battery storage—are more expensive than standalone solar or wind, falling costs for both technologies are making them competitive with new natural gas generation.

Meanwhile, the cost of new nuclear power remains significantly higher than both renewables and natural gas.

For tech companies and data center developers, speed is critical. The surge in computing demand is so rapid that up to half of all new AI servers could face power shortages by 2027. However, most new natural gas and nuclear plants won’t be operational until years later.

Renewables, on the other hand, can be deployed much faster—utility-scale solar projects can start generating power in just 18 months.

This agility has driven major investments. Last summer, Microsoft secured a deal with Brookfield Asset Management for 10.5 gigawatts of renewable capacity across the U.S. and Europe, set to be delivered by 2030.
