The partnership combines BT Group’s global connectivity network with STACKIT’s sovereign, EU-hosted cloud platform to help organizations meet strict data protection and data sovereignty requirements while improving performance and resilience.

In the initial phase, BT will provide internet-based connectivity to STACKIT’s cloud services, with plans to extend this to private, dedicated connections that bypass the public internet for greater security. These capabilities will ultimately be integrated into BT’s Global Fabric, enabling flexible, on-demand access to multi-cloud environments.

Ghoutam Banerjee highlighted that the partnership with BT Group enables a new model of digital sovereignty by allowing multinational companies to access STACKIT’s sovereign cloud from outside the EU through private, secure connections. Figure 1 shows BT International and STACKIT Expand Sovereign Cloud in Europe.

A key innovation in this collaboration is private peering, which allows organizations outside the European Union to securely connect to STACKIT’s cloud infrastructure while remaining compliant with European data protection regulations. This approach enhances operational resilience for global businesses and ensures that sensitive data remains within EU jurisdiction, supporting strict regulatory requirements.

STACKIT operates its infrastructure entirely within Europe and complies with GDPR regulations, ensuring that customer data remains within EU borders. The platform also provides strong recovery and continuity features to protect against outages and service disruptions.

Joris van Oers emphasized that customers increasingly prioritize data, operational, and technical sovereignty. He noted that CIOs require resilient networks and IT systems capable of maintaining business continuity despite trade disruptions, global outages, or natural disasters [1]. Through its partnership with STACKIT, BT Group aims to deliver secure and sovereign cloud access for European customers and strengthen its position in multi-cloud connectivity.

The collaboration reflects a broader industry trend toward digital sovereignty, as organizations seek greater control over data storage, processing, and access amid rising geopolitical uncertainty. Overall, the partnership is intended to provide businesses with improved flexibility, stronger security, and more reliable access to critical cloud services across Europe.
