Trump Refocuses Space Efforts on Moon, Not Mars

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he aims to return astronauts to the moon as soon as possible, delaying plans for Mars missions. In an executive order outlining his space policy, Trump set a goal for Americans to land on the moon by 2028 under NASA’s Artemis program, initiated during his first term.

The order emphasizes that a lunar landing would “reinforce American leadership in space, establish the groundwork for lunar economic development, prepare for future missions to Mars, and inspire the next generation of explorers.”

The executive order also states that NASA aims to establish “initial elements of a permanent lunar outpost by 2030” and plans to deploy nuclear reactors both on the moon and in orbit. Figure 1. Trump Refocuses on Moon, Delays Mars.

Americans are currently slated to return to the lunar surface in mid-2027 on the Artemis 3 mission, though the schedule has faced multiple delays. Industry experts note that further postponements are likely, as the lunar lander being developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX is not yet ready.

Trump’s order increases pressure on both NASA and the private space sector to meet the administration’s ambitious goals.

The United States is eager to outpace China, which also plans to send a crew to the moon by 2030 and establish a lunar base.

Prioritizing a lunar mission marks a shift from Trump’s earlier statements. When he returned to the White House in January, he expressed a goal of planting the American flag on Mars within his four-year term, without mentioning the moon. That announcement raised doubts about the administration’s space priorities and fueled fears that NASA might bypass the moon entirely.

Now, while Washington has long aimed to be the first nation to send humans to Mars, that goal appears more distant [1]. A June dispute between Trump and Elon Musk, a strong advocate for Mars exploration, combined with other pressing geopolitical issues, may have influenced this shift in ambitions.
