AR Ski Goggles Reveal Hazards Invisible to the Naked Eye
Provuu: Swiss Innovation for Safer, Clearer Skiing
Provuu, a Swiss brand with a deep understanding of what makes a perfect day on the slopes—even in harsh weather—is bringing its downhill ski goggles to Kickstarter. For anyone who’s ever had to call off a ski trip due to poor visibility, these goggles could be this season’s essential gear.

Flat light, dense clouds, fog, and white-out blizzards are major contributors to skiing and snowboarding accidents. Getting caught in such conditions is not only frustrating but dangerous. Provuu’s team set out to tackle this challenge with a technological solution. Figure 1 shows Spot Obstacles Instantly with Augmented-Reality Ski Goggles.
The idea originated from a personal accident: one of the founders suffered a concussion after wiping out on a snow bump hidden in fog. Recognizing a gap in the market for visibility-enhancing gear, he and his colleagues developed a solution.
The result is Provuu XR, designed for recreational skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, ski instructors, guides, and mountain rescue teams. At first glance, the goggles look like any high-end pair: they feature an anti-fog coating, ventilation slots, helmet compatibility, and weigh less than 100 grams (3.5 oz) more than standard goggles. But what sets them apart is the proprietary View-XR technology inside—built to improve visibility when you need it most.
Provuu XR goggles feature built-in high-definition 1080p cameras on two internal displays behind the outer lens. These cameras capture landscape details and textures beyond the capabilities of the human eye. The enhanced 3D video is delivered instantly through the AR displays with a latency of under 30 milliseconds—well below the threshold of human perception—providing up to a 75% increase in contrast and up to five times the visual range, making hidden obstacles in the snow easier to spot.
For bright, sunny days, View-XR mode can be turned off with a button on the strap, converting the goggles into standard eyewear. Note that the internal displays prevent compatibility with prescription glasses.
The detachable battery stores safely in a pocket when not in use. Designed to withstand extreme weather, Provuu XR goggles have been extensively tested and praised by Olympic athletes, world-class skiers, and Swiss Army Mountain guides.
The goggles offer a runtime of up to four hours—enough for a typical ski session—and can be fully recharged in about an hour, perfect for a quick break or lunch on the slopes.
Currently available only in black, Provuu has kept the design intentionally minimalistic. When asked about future features such as Wi-Fi, night mode, or tracking capabilities, a company representative explained, “We want the View-XR to feel as natural as wearing normal goggles, without any distracting notifications or heads-up displays.”
As a bonus feature, the goggles include SD-card storage and can double as an action camera, letting you record your ski runs.
Currently, the product is available exclusively to Kickstarter backers. A pledge of 449 Swiss francs (approximately US$558) secures a pair, assuming the campaign goes as planned. Pre-orders are expected to ship between October and December 2026. Provuu plans to expand into retail distribution in the future, especially in mountain regions.
