A virtual cloud desktop, also called desktop as a service (DaaS), is a cloud-based service that can transmit an entire desktop operating system and its software applications directly to a laptop, desktop or other device. Companies pay for the time their employees spend logged in to their devices.[1]

Cloud desktops are an approach to end-user computing where virtual desktops and applications are hosted on cloud-based resources rather than resources in an on-premises corporate data center.

Also known as cloud virtual desktops, cloud hosted desktops, or Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS), cloud desktops can be accessed from anywhere, using any device, as long as they are connected to the internet. VMware Horizon Cloud is an example of a cloud hosted desktop provider. [2]

Cloud desktops offer a variety of benefits to both businesses and end users. Since cloud desktops are virtual, many users can be supported on a single virtual machine (VM), offering economies of scale. Organizations can spin up new ‘desktops’ for employees rapidly, without the need to procure physical computers for the employee’s use.

Because many users can share a single instance of Windows, organizations can realize greater economies of scale, spreading the cost of an instance across multiple users.

  • Increased productivity
  • Savings
  • Enhanced security
  • Self-service simplicity
  • Increased agility [2]

In conclusion, virtual cloud desktops offer numerous benefits for businesses and individuals looking for a more flexible, scalable, and secure desktop computing solution. With the ability to access desktop environments from anywhere with an internet connection, virtual cloud desktops can enable remote work and improve productivity. They also offer better security features than traditional desktops, as all data is stored and processed in the cloud. Furthermore, virtual cloud desktops can be easily scaled up or down as needed, making them a cost-effective and efficient solution for managing desktop computing needs. As such, virtual cloud desktops are becoming an increasingly popular choice for businesses of all sizes, as well as individuals looking for a more flexible and secure desktop computing environment.
