The Tata Altroz is one of the more popular products from Tata Motors, successfully making a name for itself in the premium hatchback space, backed by a slew of engine options, attractive looks, premium interior, and a 5-star safety rating from the Global NCAP. However, the only gripe we have here is that the hatchback is offered with a manual gearbox, with the missing link here being the automatic gearbox, which the company says will be introduced in the coming weeks. This was confirmed to carandbike.com by Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, during an interaction at the launch of the iCNG range. Figure 1 shows Speaking to carandbike, Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., stated, “From a product perspective, there are certain options that are missing from our portfolio. The Altroz hatchback doesn’t have an automatic transmission, so we have to fill this open gap.” [3]

Chandran, however, did not reveal a timeline for the launch of the Altroz with the automatic gearbox, but did confirm that it is among 10 products the company plans to introduce this year. The delay in introducing new products for India could be blamed on the growing shortage of semiconductor components, which has affected India as well as global automotive markets. Although unconfirmed, the next Tata Altroz automatic is expected to use a 7-speed DCT unit and will compete with Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI and Hyundai i20 Turbo. [4]

The additional feature highlights include Xpress cool, leatherette seats, personalised wallpaper on the infotainment screen, and one shot up power window. The Altroz i-Turbo variant also gets two additional tweeters by Harman. The XT i-Turbo variant rides on 165/80 R14 steel wheels, while the XZ i-Turbo and the XZ+ i-Turbo variants ride on 195/55 R16 alloy wheels. [2]
