Microsoft has announced that the company has stopped manufacturing its last-generation Xbox One gaming consoles. The company will only produce its current-gen Xbox Series S/X consoles now.

“To focus on production of Xbox Series X / S, we stopped production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020,” Cindy Walker, senior director of Xbox console product marketing, said The Verge. [1]

Figure 1 shows the Verge quotes Cindy Walker, Senior Director of Xbox Console Product Marketing, to say Microsoft “stopped production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020” to focus on production of Xbox Series X (Review)/ Series S ₹ 34,990 gaming consoles. Meanwhile, a report by Bloomberg said that Sony also mulled discontinuing the production of PlayStation 4 consoles at the end of 2021 in order to meet PlayStation 5 demands, however, it chose to continue manufacturing the older console.

The Verge report also says that the retailers will now be looking to sell their remaining stocks of Microsoft Xbox One X ₹ 48,990 and Xbox One S consoles. [2]

Even so, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has reported that the Series X|S is the fastest-selling console in Xbox history. It’s even made some surprising inroads in Japan, which has traditionally been the hardest market for the Xbox to crack; the Series X|S has reportedly already sold more units in Japan than the Xbox One ever did.

That seems to be the overall legacy of the Xbox One, at time of writing. In a lot of ways, it was the awkward rough draft for the much more polished Series X|S, and seems destined to be a footnote by comparison to the systems that came before and after it. While Microsoft hasn’t released official hardware sales numbers since 2015, independent analysts estimate the Xbox One sold 51 million units over its operational in lifetime. [3]
