In launching the new Nest Doorbell (battery) in early August, Google also rebranded the old Nest Hello and continued selling it. Google today told customers that it’s launching a second-generation Nest Doorbell (wired) in 2022.

As part of “being more transparent” with customers on where Google is “taking the camera portfolio,” Nest GM/VP Rishi Chandra said that it “will be launching a 2nd generation of Nest Doorbell (wired) in 2022.” This is primarily to address how “those with wired doorbell connections prefer to have a doorbell that can also support 24/7 continuous video history (via the Nest Aware subscription).” [1]

Figure 1 shows The Nest Doorbell, formerly called Nest Hello, boasts an impressive set of smart features, including a new wireless doorbell option, person detection, facial recognition, and package tracking. These features, alongside new color options and hardware that will hold up in subzero temperatures, make it an effective front-door sentry for any smart home.

Still, $179 to $229 is not a small amount to spend on a single device, so let’s put things into perspective. Most people buy video doorbells for security reasons, particularly to prevent package theft. According to our own package theft research, nearly 4 out of 10 adults in the U.S. have had packages stolen from their porches, stoops, lawns, or doorsteps. [2]

Google Nest Hello doorbell camera features

The Google Nest Hello gives you everything from artificial intelligence to HD recording. The Google Nest Hello isn’t just a camera; it’s smart. It can recognize both packages and people, and it can even identify familiar faces. With one glance at your phone, you’ll know whether that person on your porch is your kid coming home from school or a stranger coming to steal your stuff.

The Nest Hello is also just a really good camera. It has 2K video recording, which is higher than we usually see with doorbell cameras. And it has HDR, so you get crisp, clear images even in awkward lighting.

Google Nest Hello features:

  • 2K HD video with HDR
  • Two-way audio
  • Continuous video recording option
  • 160º field of view
  • Quiet time snooze feature
  • Familiar face recognition
  • Package detection
  • 8x digital zoom
  • 5° to 104°F (-15° to 40°C) operating temperature
  • IPx4 weather rating
  • Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration [3]
