Netflix may soon allow users to watch livestreams of certain types of content, as per a report. The streaming platform is said to be thinking about adding the livestreaming option to enable it to air stand-up specials and other live content. This feature might also allow Netflix to air live reunions similar to the one that was recently held by the real estate reality show Selling Sunset. We can also expect Netflix to utilise the feature to come with more unscripted content, including shows that involve audience voting. [1]

Figure 1 shows as per a report by Deadline, the livestreaming feature may pave the way for more live comedy specials. To recall, Netflix held Netflix Is a Joke Fest, its first-ever live and in-person comedy festival, in Los Angeles earlier this year. While the streaming platform is set to air some of these shows later this month and in June, Netflix livestreaming is said to give us the option to watch the event from our home if Netflix brings back Netflix Is a Joke Fest next year. [2]

Netflix could also use the upcoming live-streaming option for its “Netflix Is A Joke” festival if it returns at all. The festival featured around 300 stand-up performances across Los Angeles. Among the performers were Dave Chappelle, Larry David and Pete Davidson. Live-streaming stand-up shows could allow Netflix to open new streams, such as charging exclusively for those shows. However, there is no information about whether or not Netflix is planning to monetise this upcoming feature. [3]

Earlier this month, it was reported that Netflix lost close to 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2022. The company cited the geopolitical tensions, especially the war in Ukraine, rising inflation, competition and Covid-related disruptions that led to the fall in subscriptions.

In India, the streamer has been overshadowed by Amazon Prime Video with over 17 million subscribers and Disney+Hotstar with over 36 million subscribers as of January 2022. The company hasn’t revealed the number of its subscribers in India, however, market estimates suggested that the figure could be around 4.5 million. [4]
