Zoom exploring new features as people get back to work

Zoom Video Communications is exploring new age technologies to tap the hybrid working model that is set to take shape with the waning of the pandemic and people getting back to office, said its head for the India & Saarc markets.

Sameer Raje said plans were afoot to go beyond being just a video-calling application to a collaboration platform. [1]

The new age technologies that are being explored to add features to the Zoom platform would make it “more cool”, accessible and more relevant, as the world gets back to work in office in some form or the other, Raje said. "It could be avatars, it could be a virtual world, it could be virtual interaction, it could be IoT, or multiple other things," he told ET. [1]

Figure 1 shows final week, Zoom launched the avatars function, which is able to exchange a person’s look throughout a video name with that of a digital animal that mirrors his or her head actions and facial expressions. “The market is altering and any organisation should evolve round that,” Raje mentioned. “Companies are speaking about getting collaboration embedded into their workflows, that’s what we’re doing. We’re now not only a video-calling software, we’re a whole collaboration platform.”

The Nasdaq-listed video-communications firm posted income of $4.099 billion, up 55%, final yr. However, Zoom, which turned a family title through the pandemic, has seen progress sluggish in the previous few quarters. Throughout November 2021-January 2022 (the corporate’s fiscal yr ends in January), its income rose 21% to $1.071 billion, which was a deceleration from 35% progress it reported within the earlier quarter and 367% within the January 2021 quarter. The inventory too has slumped over 38% year-to-date. [2]

As companies have sent people home, universities have gone to online learning, and people are finding new ways to connect socially, the volume for all these services has spiked. Microsoft recently said that Skype consumer service was up 70%. But Zoom has undoubtedly seen the most upside. With the customers my company works with, Zoom is skyrocketing. It was the number-one app on the iOS App Store for most of the last four or five weeks. It’s not just a business product anymore, but a consumer and international product. That’s put it under a tremendous amount of stress in terms of volume and focus.
