Google so far has launched two generations of smart displays in the market. For the third generation of the device, the company is planning something different. 9To5 Google reports that the company’s next gen smart display will come with a ‘dockable tablet form factor’ wherein the screen would detach itself from the base, which would also dub as a smart speaker. [1]

Figure 1 shows the idea that Google might use a tablet as the screen of a Nest Hub is intriguing and a way to make up some lost ground in the market. With Apple holding the majority share with its iPad and Samsung accounting for a large portion of what's left, Google will have to work hard to make a place for itself if that is part of its plans. There is reason to believe that Google is putting more attention on larger screens. [2]

Software options:

If Google is indeed planning a new Nest Hub with a detachable display, it poses the question of what software the device is going to run. The recently unveiled, tablet-friendly Android 12L could be one option, and would enable full Android app support.

Alternatively, Google could stick with the simpler Cast software that runs on the current 2nd-gen Nest Hub and which has been given several upgrades recently. Another possibility is that the next device will come with the fledgling Fuchsia OS – that operating system is currently used by the first-gen Nest Hub. [3]

Analysis: Smart Speakers Continue to Evolve:

The smart speaker was the first, spurred on by the success of the Amazon Echo. Amazon Echo was released in 2013 and has since gained widespread popularity. The smart speaker with a screen was next, with Amazon once again setting the standard with the Amazon Echo Show, which is available in various sizes.

To compete with Amazon and Google, there has been speculation that Apple may include a display in the next HomePod, similar to the Amazon Echo and the Google Nest Hub. [4]
