Quantum Batteries Soon to Become Reality

It is expected that by 2040, energy consumption by humans will rise by 28 per cent compared to 2015 with fossil fuel being a major contributor. While the ongoing work on solar technologies promises to bring respite, they are deemed to be unpredictable for providing a continuous energy supply.

In a step toward offering an even better energy source, researchers at the University of Adelaide and their overseas partners have successfully proved the concept of superabsorption, the backbone for making quantum batteries a reality. Upon development, quantum batteries can significantly impact energy capture and storage in renewable energy and miniature electronic devices. [1]

Figure 1 shows Quantum batteries, which use quantum mechanical ideas to boost their capabilities, require much less charging time the larger they get,” stated Dr James Q. Quach, Ramsay Fellow within the College of Bodily Sciences and the Institute for Photonics and Superior Sensing (IPAS), College of Adelaide.

“It’s theoretically potential that the charging energy of quantum batteries will increase sooner than the dimensions of the battery which might permit new methods to hurry charging,” he stated.

To show the idea of superabsorption, the group constructed a number of wafer-like microcavities of various sizes that contained completely different numbers of natural molecules, every of which was charged utilizing a laser. [2]

“This is a significant breakthrough, and marks a major milestone in the development of the quantum battery.”

The next step is to now develop a fully functioning quantum battery prototype, with the hope of ushering in a new era of ultra-efficient batteries for use in electric vehicles and electronic devices.

The way quantum batteries operate means they could potentially harvest and store light energy simultaneously, providing significant cost reductions compared to conventional solar technologies. [3]
