Samsung Display has an impressive screen to show off at CES — a 4K panel that melds OLED technology with the company’s Quantum Dot material to produce colors that can outshine rival TVs and monitors.

The technology is called “QD-Display,” and it marks the company’s latest effort to top the OLED panels from rival LG. OLED screens are known for offering vibrant colors and pure blacks, and Samsung says its QD-Display can offer even higher color quality and brightness, not to mention pure blacks, a key improvement over Samsung’s QLED TVs. Figure 1 shows developed by Samsung, QD-OLED is one of the newest and most exciting kids on the flat panel block. For once, its name represents exactly what it is: a combination of the Quantum Dot (QD) displays, endorsed by market leader Samsung as well as the likes of Hisense, Vizio and Roku, and OLED technology, of which Samsung's arch-rival LG is the dominant player, as the sole supplier of large OLED panels to other manufacturers. [2]

The blue light generated from the light source of the QD display has a very high color purity, and the red and green QD that produces color by receiving the blue light also produces color light with high color purity. RGB with high color purity can express a broad range of colors. Therefore, the QD display has a very wide range of color expressions among current displays and can show colors closest to what we see with our eyes.[3]

The company is offering more affordable W-OLED panels such as those with 60Hz refresh rate to expand its share in the OLED TV space.

It has a total capacity of 170,000 substrates per month, near six times that of Samsung Display, from its facilities in South Korea and China.

Samsung Display could also decide to not to expand QD-OLED production and instead jump to QD nanorod LED (QNED) panels instead.

This will depend on how much QD-OLED Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display’s biggest customer, decides to buy going forward. [4]
