Revolutionary MRI Technique Delivers Sharper Eye and Brain Scans
Researchers at Max Delbrück Center have developed a new lightweight MRI antenna that could significantly improve the clarity of scans for delicate and deep tissues, including the eye and brain. The innovation may also shorten scan times without requiring hospitals to replace existing MRI machines.
MRI technology is essential for diagnosing disease, but capturing detailed images of sensitive areas such as the eye, orbit, and deep brain regions has remained challenging. Traditional radiofrequency (RF) coils often struggle to gather strong enough signals from these areas, leading to longer scans and lower image quality.

Led by doctoral researcher Nandita Saha and Professor Thoralf Niendorf, the team designed an advanced antenna using metamaterials — engineered structures capable of controlling electromagnetic waves more efficiently than conventional materials. The new RF antenna boosts signal strength, improves image resolution, and accelerates data collection while remaining compatible with current MRI systems.
Working alongside researchers from Rostock University Medical Center, the scientists tested the technology on eye and orbit imaging using a 7.0 Tesla MRI scanner. The results demonstrated highly detailed images that could improve ophthalmology diagnostics and provide new insights into conditions that were previously difficult to study.
Beyond eye imaging, the technology could support safer MRI scans around medical implants, enhance MRI-guided cancer therapies, and improve imaging of organs such as the heart and kidneys [1]. Researchers also believe it may help track metabolism, drug movement, and specialized imaging techniques involving sodium or fluorine atoms.
The lightweight and flexible design could make scans more comfortable for patients while helping doctors make faster and more accurate diagnoses. Larger hospital studies are now being planned as researchers continue adapting the technology for broader medical applications.
