Apple’s redesigned 24in iMac is exciting; it boasts a slimmer build, bigger display, Apple’s M1 processor and a raft of hardware improvements, and it’s available in a variety of eye-catching colours too. It gives us a glimpse at what to expect from the successor to the 27in iMac, with rumours suggesting a screen increase possibly up to 32in alongside a dramatically thin new form factor. [1]

When Apple initially revealed its transition to its own Apple Silicon back in June 2020, the company claimed the process would take two years. With that in mind, it’s safe to assume that the upgraded big iMac will make an appearance by June 2022 at the latest. [1]

Figure 1 shows The new 14-inch MacBook Pro will be released this year, and it will have the new M1X as the new iMac so it will be probably released with it at the end of this year at the upcoming Apple event.

Also, the new MacBook Air will be released at the beginning of 2022 will have the new M2 cheap, and thus Apple will not want an overlap to occur and the new M1X to be released at the exact same time. Since even though the M1X is actually more powerful, the naming might get some people confused when they see the bigger number on the M2. [2]

The performance

Performance is indeed the main point that comes to mind when talking about a device targeted to the most premium of users. After all, this is a device that will be incredibly expensive and will have enough power to perfectly complete any task easily.

The 24-inch iMac is the lower-end model, therefore, Apple added the M1 chip to it, which is the chip Apple adds to its cheaper models that target non-professional users. This is the chip added to the iPad, MacBook Air, 24-inch iMac, current MacBook Pro 13-inch, and is even similar to the A14 chip of the current iPhone. [2]

The Pro Display XDR offers:

  • A maximum of 1,600 nits of brightness, 1000 nits brightness (sustained, full screen), 500 nits SDR brightness.
  • XDR (Extreme Dynamic Range).
  • 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
  • P3 wide colour gamut, 10-bit colour depth for 1.073 billion colours
  • A superwide viewing angle at 89 degrees left, 89 degrees right, 89 degrees up, 89 degrees down.
  • Monitor works in both landscape and portrait orientation.
  • Standard screen is engineered for low reflectivity, but the optional nano-texture glass surface (which adds $1,000 to the price) etches a matt finish into the glass "at the nanometre level" to scatter light and avoid glare. [3]
