MathGPT.AI the “Cheat-Resistant” Learning Assistant, Now Adopted by 50+ Institutions

As AI becomes increasingly common in classrooms—where students often turn to it for assignments and teachers grapple with how to respond—MathGPT.ai has emerged as a tool designed to prevent cheating while enhancing learning.

Launched last year, the platform acts as both an “anti-cheating” tutor for students and a teaching assistant for professors. After a successful pilot across 30 U.S. colleges and universities, MathGPT.ai is now set to expand to nearly twice as many institutions this fall, including Penn State, Tufts, and Liberty University, with hundreds of instructors planning to integrate it into their courses. Figure 1 shows MathGPT.AI the “Cheat-Proof” Teaching Assistant, Expands to Over 50 Colleges and Universities.

What sets MathGPT.ai apart is its chatbot’s reliance on Socratic questioning—guiding students with prompts and feedback instead of simply giving answers. This approach fosters critical thinking rather than rote memorization.

For faculty, the platform also provides valuable support by generating assignments and questions from uploaded course materials, offering auto-grading, and including other AI-powered features. Currently, it supports college-level subjects such as Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, and more.

Alongside its expansion, MathGPT.ai has rolled out an upgraded version of its platform with new features designed to give professors greater control over how students engage with the tools.

Unlike many AI education platforms, MathGPT.ai emphasizes an instructor-first approach. Faculty can now decide when students are permitted to use the chatbot, tailoring its availability to specific assignments where tutoring support is encouraged while restricting it for others to promote independent work.

Another key update allows instructors to set limits on how many attempts students have to answer a question correctly. At the same time, the platform has introduced unlimited practice questions that don’t affect grades, offering students a stress-free way to reinforce concepts.

The platform has also improved accessibility and integration. MathGPT.ai now connects directly with the three largest Learning Management Systems—Canvas, Blackboard, and Brightspace—and supports screen readers and an audio mode. Its video lessons, already equipped with closed captions, feature AI narration styled after historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein.

While popular chatbots such as Meta AI, Character.AI, and ChatGPT have faced criticism over inappropriate or off-topic exchanges with young users, MathGPT.ai emphasizes that it has strict guardrails to maintain a safe learning environment.

“It will not have discussions with you about your girlfriend, boyfriend, or the meaning of life,” said Peter Relan, chairman of MathGPT.ai, in an interview with TechCrunch. “It will simply not engage. Because these freestanding chatbots will go in that direction, right? We are not here to entertain those kinds of conversations.” Relan, who previously incubated Got It AI and was an early investor in Discord, said this approach is part of what makes MathGPT.ai different.

Still, the company acknowledges that its AI assistant is not flawless. A disclosure at the bottom of the chatbot reminds users that mistakes are possible, and students or instructors can report inaccuracies directly to the company. Relan noted that MathGPT.ai actively tracks and addresses these cases, even rewarding users with gift cards for reporting errors. “Year one, there were five [hallucinations]. Year two, there was one. So far this year, none,” he said, adding that every piece of content, from textbooks to generated assignments, is reviewed by a team of human annotators to help ensure “100% accuracy.”

Looking ahead, the company plans to launch a mobile app and expand beyond math into additional subjects such as chemistry, economics, and accounting.

MathGPT.ai is available in both a free tier and a paid option priced at $25 per student per course. The premium plan includes added benefits such as unlimited AI-generated assignments and integration with major Learning Management Systems.
